What is are Biometrics?
The registration of children's height, weight and BMI. These are basic measurements that are quick and easy to record, and provide an important additional layer alongside the motor skills assessments and questionnaires.
Why does this matter?
Height, weight and BMI are objective indicators of a child's physical health. They are easy to measure, yet rarely tracked structurally in schools. While it is precisely the development over time that provides valuable information: is a child's weight increasing disproportionately? Is the BMI deviating further from the norm? These signals can only be picked up when you measure consistently.
What are the risks of abnormal biometrics?
Children who are overweight are at greater risk of motor delays, lower fitness levels and less enjoyment in physical activity. But being underweight can also signal an unhealthy development. An abnormal BMI that goes unnoticed can compound over the years. The earlier you identify it, the easier it is to intervene, for example by encouraging physical activity or discussing lifestyle with parents.
What does it deliver?
Per child, the development of height, weight and BMI over time. At group and school level, you can see how biometric data compares to established norms and which trends are emerging. For municipalities and districts, this data is valuable for supporting health policy.
Connections worth noting
Biometrics is a connecting factor across virtually all other components. An abnormal BMI often correlates with lower physical activity levels, lower gross motor scores and reduced fitness (shuttle run). By tracking biometrics structurally alongside the other assessments, you uncover these connections and can intervene more effectively. Combined with the lifestyle questionnaire (once available), an even more complete picture emerges.
