Shuttle run
What is Shuttle Run?
The 20-metre shuttle run test measures children's fitness (aerobic endurance). Children run back and forth over a distance of 20 metres, with the pace increasing progressively based on an audio signal. The test ends when a child can no longer keep up with the pace.
Why does this matter?
Fitness is a direct indicator of a child's physical health. Good fitness contributes to concentration, academic performance and overall wellbeing. Children with good fitness levels are more active, recover faster and have more energy throughout the school day. The shuttle run is a standardised, objective measurement that is easy to administer and produces reliably comparable results.
What are the risks of poor fitness?
Poor fitness in children is more than "not being sporty". It is associated with fatigue, difficulty concentrating and lower energy levels throughout the day. Children with low fitness drop out of physical activities sooner, which causes them to move even less and fitness to decline further. In the long term, poor fitness at a young age increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and other lifestyle-related conditions.
What does it deliver?
Per child, an objective fitness measurement compared to established norms. At group and school level, you can see how fitness stands and how it develops over the years. The shuttle run is particularly relevant for children aged 12 and up, where fitness and activity levels become increasingly important.
Connections worth noting
Fitness is directly linked to physical activity levels: children who move less typically score lower on the shuttle run. Combined with biometric data, you can see whether lower fitness correlates with an abnormal BMI. And at school level, you can use the shuttle run as a measure of effectiveness for physical activity programmes: does average fitness improve after an intervention?

"Finally a tool I can use in a single lesson that immediately shows me where to focus. That gives me back time I can spend with the children."
